What to wear on your first day as a Speech Therapist

Accessories

We received a rather unusual, but very specific SOS this weekend – what do you wear when you’re about to embark on your career as a Speech Therapist?

We were given some pretty clear guidelines:

  • This wardrobe is for a graduate, so nothing OTT expensive
  • Outfits must be fashionable and on trend
  • Shoes must be comfortable with a flat or low heel
  • Wardrobe must be suitable for working with children
  • Clothes must be ‘flexible’ enough for being on the floor playing with patients and conducting exams

This SOS was all about finding functional work wear – something most of us have to deal with at one level or another every day.

As television producers we can pretty much wear what we want, within reason – depending on whether we’re working in the office, in the field or in post production.

If we’re in the field then comfort and functionality is key – we must wear closed-toe shoes for health and safety (flat ankle boots are your best friend), pants or shorts are preferable as they have pockets (for your phone, pens and two-way radio) and we often have to wear black so we don’t stand out on camera.

Speech Therapy is something we know very little about, but after reading the guidelines, immediately a mix of relaxed pants, t-shirts, button down shirts, cropped jackets, ankle boots and loafers came to mind.

If you invest in a few good-quality pairs of draped pants and chinos, and a couple of different cropped jackets, then you can mix and match with tops and shoes.

We’ve come up with a 7-day work wardrobe, including two options for Monday – because your first impression is always the most important!

MONDAY – OPTION TWO ‘PANT SUIT’

This is another great outfit to have up your sleeve – these are relatively inexpensive, high-quality pieces that you’ll be able to mix and match all the time.

TUESDAY – BOOTS AND LEGGINGS

Wearing leggings with any kind of oversized top is one of the most comfortable outfits ever invented – it feels like you’re wearing pyjamas! But with a little styling you can make sure you look a bit sharper than you do at bed time. Low heel or flat ankle boots are also a stylish way to be comfortably on your feet all day.

WEDNESDAY – CHINOS AND LOAFERS

Channel a little prep school style and maximise effect with different coloured chinos and animal print loafers.

THURSDAY – WIDE LEG PANTS

Wide leg pants are incredibly flattering. Wear them with shirts or tank tops tucked in to make the most of the silhouette. And a draped leather jacket will be your go-to staple for winter.

FRIDAY – DRESS DOWN JEANS DAY

If your work will let you get away with wearing jeans, then you should invest in a quality, black skinny pair. You can throw on a button down shirt at any time and you’re good to go.

SATURDAY – RELAXED AND SPORTY

If you find the right pair, you can wear sneakers and trainers with skinny jeans and look all-together smoking hot. Also try a collared shirt under a jumper for extra ‘sporty’ styling.

SUNDAY – BEST DRESS

Although hopefully you won’t be working on a Sunday, you could definitely wear a sweatshirt dress with opaque tights into the office. The fact that it’s knee length and has a bit of stretch makes it easy to move around in.

A NOTE ON SIZING

Make sure you check any sizing if you’re ordering from the US or the UK. For the most part UK clothing sizes are similar to Australia, perhaps some brands might be one size larger. So if you’re normally a AU 12, you might need a UK 10.

Numbered clothing sizes are definitely different in the USA. If you’re normally an AU 12, then you’ll probably be a US 8, or if you’re a AU 10, then you’ll be an US 6 etc. – two sizes down as a rule.

If US sizing is Small, Medium, Large, then generally it’s the same as in Australia.

It’s always best to check each label’s size guide online, and if you’re still unsure then what we usually do is make sure the store accepts returns/refunds and order the one garment in two sizes, so we can try both on. It costs a little more, but it means you get the right size first time.
